I regret to report that on the 2nd instant, considerable damage was done to the Lighthouse at Gap Rock. There was, fortunately, no loss of life at the Lighthouse, nor did any of the staff sustain any serious injury. I transmit for Your Lordship's information the enclosed copy of a preliminary report by the Director of Public Works shewing the extent of the damage done, and the arrangements that have been made for exhibiting temporary light, until the permanent service can be restored.

Encl: 1 Govt. Not. 379, 19th Oct. 1893. (with six spare copies).

I have called for a further report which will, I trust, enable certain points bearing on the cause of the damage to be definitely ascertained, and as soon as it is received a copy will be forwarded to Your Lordship.

2. Notification of the interruption of the light-service was telegraphed to the Southern ports, and copies of the enclosed notice to Mariners (Govt. Not. 361, 6th Oct. 1893) regarding the same were issued.
